What is your business about?

I’m a successful crime author with 13 published, 12 of which were bestsellers. I write gritty Uk based organised crime with family, loyalty and colourfully flawed characters at the heart of each one.

Please describe your life before starting

I was a drifter, professionally. Like so many of us, I was a bright spark with skills, who would easily lose interest and/or burn out too often. I knew something was different about me - I was only diagnosed at 35.

What made you decide to take the leap and start your own business?

I’d always written for fun, on the side. I’d started picking up freelance ghostwriting work, but when I had my son everything suddenly shifted and I found my motivation to do more. To do better. I couldn’t do it for me but I could for him.

How would you describe your life now, as a solopreneur?

I’m successful but still winging it a lot. I still struggle with chaotic organisation and burnout etc. But it’s about finding the right way for you to push forward. Not just doing things how society suggests.

How has your ADHD played a positive role in your business life?

Creativity! And the ability to think about 7 things at once. It helps hold up all the threads you’re trying to weave through a story. Also, hyperfocus kicks in when publisher deadlines loom. When that happens it’s pretty insane, in the best way.

What's your top tip for other ADHD women aspiring to be solopreneurs?

Stop trying to do it societies way. Adapt everything about your journey to you. You were born with superpowers, and yes, the journey is so incredibly hard being in a ND world. But you can do anything if you stop following their map and plot out your own instead.
